Syllabus (summary)

The IB Business and Management SL course is designed around five central topics.

Topic 1: Business organisation and environment introduces students to the fundamental nature of business activity, and to different types of business organisations. It also introduces the relationship between business objectives and stakeholders, and investigates the opportunities and threats in business environments. Students investigate the full range of organisational planning tools as well as the challenges of growth and globalisation.

Topic 2: Human resources explores the range of business challenges in areas such as HR planning, organisational structures, communication, leadership and management, and motivation.

Topic 3: Accounting and finance enables students to evaluate sources of finance and to appraise investment. They are required to understand the management of working capital, final accounts and how to engage in purposeful ratio analysis.

Topic 4: Marketing requires students to examine all facets of marketing, including product, planning, price, promotion, international marketing and e-commerce.

Topic 5: Operations management challenges students to evaluate the full range of business operations, including including production methods, costs and revenues, break-even analysis, quality assurance, location of production, and project management.
